A session can look different depending on where the student is in their essay writing journey!
A session can start from the very beginning — I can help the student pick their common app prompt, organize supplements, and formulate ideas. This is sometimes the most daunting part! From there, I will give the student materials to review and direction for them to craft their first draft.
Has the student already written their first draft? Great! We can review their draft together to ensure that a strong, clear message is being made.
Does the student feel strongly about their message and only wants suggestions and edits made asychronously? Great — I charge $75 for asynchronous edits/ suggestions on pieces of work over 400 words. This is a great option for someone who wants a neutral third party to check for grammar and clarity.
Does the student need help crafting their supplemental essays? No problem! I can provide support through the entire process.
This tutoring series will focus on preparing the student for a successful common app essay!
What is the "common app?" A majority of universities in the United States accept the "common app" or common application for college admissions materials. This streamlines applications and means that students across the world applying to US universities are answering some of the same essay prompts. The prompts for this year can be found here.
A great common app essay helps set you apart from the crowd and is essential for a strong application. This tutoring series is a suggested progression from idea formation to a strong draft. This progression includes 2 sessions and 1 asynchronous revision.
Idea formation and prompt selection. The student leaves the session with "homework" materials to review and guidance for crafting their first draft.
Asynchronous revision of draft 1.
Live review of draft 2. Student to leave with comprehensive notes and suggestions for next steps. Additional tutoring sessions available upon request.
*A progression must be booked within a 2-3 week timeframe. Sessions are scheduled in advance.
Standards & expectations — I do not use ChatGBT for essay writing, editing, or idea generation. I strongly oppose such uses in the application process. Admissions committees have a strong sense of when an essay is original — ChatGBT cannot write an original essay for you that is genuine. Additionally, I will not write an essay for a student. The essay is solely the student's work. My role is as a coach for idea formation, structure, and standard grammatical checks. I will not "heavily revise" an essay to a point where the work is not the student's. For example, I can help spot a long run-on sentence, and suggest breaking it up, but I cannot rewrite the sentence in its entirety. I can provide feedback on whether a prompt is answered or if a student's voice is coming across, but I cannot answer the prompt for them. If you do not share these views, please do not proceed with my services.
A cancellation fee of $25 will apply to all sessions cancelled within 48 hours. All tutoring sessions must be paid at lease 24 hours before the session begins. Via paypal or venmo.
My tutoring services are not a product of Stanford or Colorado College.
